MEETING ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL "Z" HELD AT PARKLAND

This morning, April 1st, at the Parkland Library, the first meeting was held by the Park Trails PTA as well as new parents coming into elementary School Z. It was a very pleasant and productive meeting. The meeting started off with Stacey Udine, as she introduced the incoming principal of School Z, Mr.Kenneth "Ken" King.

Mr. King was very friendly and he answered every one's concerns and questions. He introduced himself by telling everyone a little about his personal life and academic life as well. Mr. King has been married for 13 years and has two small children,a six-year old and a ten-year old, both in elementary school. He was previously the assistant principal at Park Trails Elementary when it started, was the Principal for Banyan Elementary and was also a Science teacher in the past. He has been in education for 18 years. He expressed to all the parents, his love of learning, teaching and most of all, his love for children.

During this meeting, a new P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association) was formed, along with the PTA members from Park Trails. Some committees were also established. For the most part, parents raised questions and Mr. King effectively answered them all.

School Z, which has yet to be officially named, expects to have about 588 students. The maximum capacity for the school is about 960. School Z will be home to all elementary school-age children that live in Heron Bay and plan on attending public school. Most students currently in Park Trails that live in Heron Bay, will be transferring to School Z.

By May 1st, registration packets for the new school will go home in children's backpacks, for those kids already attending Park Trails. For those children coming from different schools, parents must pick up packets at the Park Trails school office.

As most people have already heard, School Z will be the first "green school" in the county. Mr. King said there is going to be a lot of new technology implemented in the school (ie: interactive boards, plenty of digital gadgets and even the use of iPod's on some occasions.)School Z will be environmentally friendly and have plenty of energy efficient facilities. The new school will feature new parking areas for faculty and visitors, covered drop-off areas for parents and buses and development of sports/recreation fields.

Some of the points that were addressed were:

*There will be no outside busing.

*You must live exactly 2 miles away from the school, in order for your child be able to have bus service. (Measured from your driveway to the school.)

*It has not yet been determined if it will be a uniform school or not (there must be a 66 2/3 % vote in favor - this has yet to be voted upon.)

*There will be about 20 teachers taken from Park Trails, the remainder from Riverglades and if need be Mr. King will recruit from the outside, depending if there is a need or not.

*By around May 1st, it will become public who the teachers will be.

*There will be no Pre-K at this time.

*There will be no complex programs for now.

*The maximum number of children per class should average to 18 for K-3rd and
22 students for 4th & 5th grades.

*There will be a Kindergarten round-up on or around May 6th.

*There will not be any new Science or Math books purchased this year for the new school, as the District will be buying new ones next year. Books will be taken from Park Trails.

APRIL 13, 2009: the next meeting regarding Elementary School Z will be held at the auditorium at Stoneman Douglas High School at 6:30p.m. At this meeting there will be a brainstorming session regarding the naming of the school. Students are welcome to participate in this meeting, if so desired.

In summary, it was very positive meeting and everyone is very excited about the new school and all the great things that our children will be a part of!
